Well, I thought I’d write this before I forget that experience! This was something that happened on Labour Day over at Serangoon, this house, literally, which shelters abused maids waiting to return to their homes. Honestly, this was something I was made to go for under RJ’s Interact Club (I needed the hours too! :/ ). Yup! I was considering ponning it anyway cos it was my whole Labour Day burnt out! Haha! Those who were with me at Joel’s would know better I was complaining loads!
Thank Goodness! I didn’t! I’d say He works in surprising ways!
All the way at Serangoon I entered this 3-storey house, immediately shocked by the number of maids there.. I mean how often do you see 120-odd women squeezed in a house? They’re quite friendly lah.. they call us ‘Sisters’ ", They were really happy and comfortable with each other! All of them quite good singers and dancers! I felt the warmth and love there.. quite cool lah.. I tell you, when they start singing in unison.. made me think of MGS.. they actually sang some hymns too (!)
Then nearing the evening, this chinese woman who is in charge of the shelter came by, she gathered all of them and us and said grace for them all. I was taken aback cos I wasn’t expecting this shelter to be ‘Christian’.. Then ALL of them maids sang a ‘grace’ song in Bahasa.. wah.. you have to hear it to know how I felt.. It’s amazing how this little house CAN be a place for ministry?
The best part that totally changed my attitude.. After singing, ALL of them went round shaking each other’s hands, with a smile, wishing each one ‘Peace!’ Because I was standing at the side, I reckon I received more handshakes than most interactors.. Picture this: 100 odd complete strangers, all rushing towards you, with a real smile, eager to make friends and shake your hand, each one wishing you the Peace of God? That genuine-ness.. left me speechless.. I was in too much shock to wish some of them back actually, haha so I could only return a smile! (: And handshake of course! Suddenly felt ashamed of myself for being so unwilling initially.. Heh!
Afterwards, I just had to have a word with that Chinese lady, asked her if this shelter was funded by any Church.. She said no! But because she was a Christian the best she can do was to share this love with them (that’s why the Christian influence!) Hmm.. interesting.. said it was somehitng God called her to do.. and I said to her what a bold step it must have been! To somehow receive generous help and donations from other means to keep this ministry going, she managed! I mean the necessities and house rental etc. for 100 over women?
I guess, when God calls you to do something? He really provides the means and the faith! (: I’m so glad I didn’t pon! Really!
